Trout Fishing Lures
There are many trout fishing lures and I wiil talk about the most common ones that we use for fishing in Rotorua, New Zealand. The Tasmanian Devil is the first image below. A hook is attached to a split ring and then to a small swivel. We then tie a nylon trace to the swivel and thread that through the lure and attach that to another small swivel. The length of trace that I use is approx. 600mm long. I use 15lb breaking strength for the traces. The lures come in many different colours and patterns. Different ones work better at different times of the year and day. The next image shows examples of Toby Spinners. These are set up with a hook and split ring at one end and swivel at the other. Again many different colours and patterns. The third image is a small selection of flies. They can represent small fish, insects and small crayfish all of which are on the trout's diet. The flies can be used with spinners or on their own. For jigging, 3 flies are tied on about 500mm to 700mm apart, with a small smelt type fly at the top and a woolly type (small crayfish) at the bottom. Also a very small sinker is tied on. Fish are located using a Fish Finder and then the line is lowered down to where the fish are and then a jiggly action is applied to the rod to make them look like they are swimming. The last image is a selection of Cobra Spinners. These are setup similiar to the Tasmanian Devil lures and like them come in many different colours and patterns. My normal rig for trolling is a 10-15m trace tied to a 30m sinking fly line. I thread a smelt type fly onto the trace and then tie off onto the swivel of a Tasmanian Devil rig. This is then trolled behind my boat slowly so that the lure 'wrigles' in the water. The rod shold have a gentle bobing action to it. The larger trout think that the spinner is chasing the smelt flie and with a little luck will strike the lure. This method proves to be very sucessful and sometimes you will get a srike on the fly as well. I have a couple of rods rigged in the boat so that I can swap if I am not getting any bites. One has the sinking fly line, the other has about a 15m trace tied to two colours of lead line (20m) then onto 50m of backing. With this setup, I can fish in different depths of water depending on what rod I use and how much line I have let out. The rods that I use are light spinning rods approx 6' long. Tight Lines All.

The Tasmanian Devils don't look so fierce when they're not moving.
