Trout Fishing in Rotorua
Rotorua has many different lakes, rivers and streams that can be fished for trout. Trout can be cooked in many different ways such as smoked, baked, steamed and in a pie. You must have a valid licence, even if you are a child to be able to fish for trout. They can be obtain from sports shops, dairys and service stations as well as bought online. There are diferent types of licence, from day, weekly and yearly and for an adult or child as well as a family version that can include your grandchildren. There are two main types of trout, the more common Rainbow and Brown trout. Trophy fish are classed as being over 10lb and are often mounted to display them to family and friends. Trout must be caught on a rod and line and different types of lures including bait in certain areas. You can not fish for trout between 12:00 midnight and 5:00am. There are also size restrictions in certain areas. Lake Rotorua is the largest lake in the area and is open 12 months of the year. Trolling and spining is allowed in all areas of the lake except for a few marked stream mouths. Jigging is now a popular way to fish for trout, but you would need a Fish Finder to locate them first. Different lures that are used are trout flies, tobys, tasmanian devils and nymphs. The spinning type lures are normaly trolled behind your boat or cast out and retrived back to you, remembering to raise your rod tip went the big one strikes. Flies and nymphs are normaly used on a special fly fishing rod and flicked out back and forth to gain distance and postion, then released to settle in the water. They are then either retrived towards you or let to drift down towards you, again raising the rod tip when you suspect that a trout as struck. Fly fishing does involve practice and patience but the rewards on catching the big one are worth it. Trolling from a boat is easier for the beginner and can be a lot of fun for the family. Guides and boats are avaliable for hire in most areas. Tight Lines All. |
